Speaker Lineup: Topic 4 – Breakthroughs of Buddhism

1） 释惟善法师 Venerable Shi Weishan

惟善法师现任中国人民大学佛教与宗教学理论研究所副教授及中国人民大学区域国别研究院高级研究员。他于1997年至2005年留学斯里兰卡凯拉尼亚大学，分别获得巴利语与佛教研究硕士和博士学位。

自2006年9月起，惟善法师在中国人民大学任教，并曾在2012年8月至2013年8月期间于美国华盛顿大学担任访问学者，2019年3月至9月期间于香港大学担任访问学者。他的研究和教学领域主要集中于早期佛教、阿毗达磨佛教、上座部佛教及佛教梵文等。

自2004年起，惟善法师在多个国内外重要学术期刊上发表论文和译文50余篇，期刊包括《佛学研究》《世界宗教研究》《宗教学研究》《法音》及国际期刊如《Journal of Buddhist Studies》《Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies》等。其代表作包括《说一切有部之禅定论研究—以梵文<俱舍论>及其梵汉注释为基础》，以及译著《梵文佛典导读：基础语法指南》。

Venerable Weishan is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Buddhism and Religious Studies, Renmin University of China, and a Senior Research Fellow at the university’s Institute of Regional and Country Studies. From 1997 to 2005, he studied at the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka, earning both a Master’s and a Doctoral degree in Pali and Buddhist Studies.

Since September 2006, Venerable Weishan has been teaching at Renmin University. He also served as a visiting scholar at the University of Washington from August 2012 to August 2013, and at the University of Hong Kong from March to September 2019. His research and teaching focus on Early Buddhism, Abhidharma Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism, and Buddhist Sanskrit.

Since 2004, Venerable Weishan has published over 50 papers and translations in key academic journals both domestically and internationally, including Buddhist Studies, Studies in World Religions, Religious Studies, The Voice of Dharma, and international journals such as Journal of Buddhist Studies and Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies. His major works include and Dhyana-samapatti in sarvastivada abhidharma, and the translation Reading Buddhist Sanskrit Texts: An Elementary Grammatical Guide.

2）魏德东教授 Prof. Wei Dedong

魏教授现任中国人民大学哲学院教授、国际佛学研究中心主任，同时担任中国生命关怀协会公益文化促进（心性关怀）专业委员会主任委员。他曾在纽约哥伦比亚大学东亚语言与文化系担任客座研究员（2016-2019），并于美国贝勒大学宗教研究所完成博士后研究（2007-2008）。他的研究领域包括佛教学与宗教社会学。

魏德东教授以中文与英文发表了多部重要著作与学术论文，涵盖佛教哲学及宗教社会学等主题。其代表性著作包括《佛教唯识哲学要义》、三卷本《魏德东的宗教评论》及《佛教的生态观》。他也在国际学术界发表论文，如“Religious Involvement and Depression”和“Animal Release Rituals in New York City”。此外，他主编了多部学术丛书，包括“Sociology of Religion: a Rodney Stark Reader”、“Sociology of Religion: a David Martin Reader”、《国际佛学论丛》、《佛学译丛》及《宗教社会学大师译丛》。

魏德东教授的学术兴趣广泛，曾考察、调研超过30个国家与地区，覆盖美洲、亚洲、欧洲及南极洲，重点关注宗教、社会与自然发展的交互影响。

Professor Wei Dedong is a Professor at the School of Philosophy at Renmin University of China and the Director of the International Buddhist Studies Center. From 2016 to 2019, he was a visiting scholar at the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures of Columbia University, and from 2007 to 2008, he completed postdoctoral research at the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University in the United States. His research areas include Buddhist studies and the sociology of religion.

Professor Wei has published several significant books and academic papers in both Chinese and English, covering topics in Buddhist philosophy and religious sociology. He has also published papers in international academic circles, such as “Religious Involvement and Depression” and “Animal Release Rituals in New York City.” Additionally, he has edited several academic collections, including Sociology of Religion: A Rodney Stark Reader, Sociology of Religion: A David Martin Reader etc.

Professor Wei’s academic interests are broad, having conducted research and field studies in over 30 countries and regions, spanning the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Antarctica, with a focus on the interactions between religion, society, and natural development.

3）沈明信居士 Bro. Sim Beng Shin

沈明信居士生于馬六甲，以學佛、寫作為一生志業。目前担任马佛光文化总编辑。

Bro. Sim Beng Shin was born in Malacca and has dedicated his life to studying Buddhism and writing. He currently serves as the Chief Editor of Fo Guang Publication.
