省庵大师《劝发菩提心文》云：
“尝闻入道要门，发心为首；修行急务，立愿居先。愿立则众生可度，心发则佛道堪成。不发广大心，立坚固愿，则纵经尘劫，依然还在轮回；虽有修行，总是徒劳辛苦。”

“菩提”二字，是古印度的梵语，译成汉文的意义为“觉”，即是成佛的意思，菩提心即是成佛的心。发菩提心，就是发无上正等正觉之心，也就是要发“上求佛道、下化众生”之心。
