上座部佛教《南传菩萨道》说明修菩萨道必须发愿成佛，修行修到被佛授记未来成佛才能称为菩萨。菩萨必须修行最少四大阿僧祇加上十万大劫才能成佛。当菩萨被佛陀授记后会靠自己想通成佛必须累积十波罗蜜。
