Negeri Sembilan is the last state in Malaysia where the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM) established its State Liaison Committee. Although the Negeri Sembilan State Liaison Committee was only officially formed in 1990 and has since entered its 35th year, as early as the 1980s there were already groups of young Buddhists dedicated to continuing the Buddha’s wisdom and spreading the Dharma. They actively organised and participated in various Buddhist activities and Dharma assemblies in the state. Many enthusiastic youths were not only active locally, but also crossed state boundaries to join national events such as the National Dharma Walk, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to upholding and propagating the Dharma.
On the day of its founding, Venerable Ji Cheng, together with representatives of three Buddhist youth associations—Chung Sin Loon (Chairman of Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha Pertang), Lim Min Chong (Chairman of Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha Kampung Baru Dangi), and Hua Gou (Chairman of Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha Triang Hilir)—gathered with members and devotees at hall of Pertang for the historic First YBAM Negeri Sembilan State Biennial Convention. That evening, Venerable Ji Cheng delivered a grand Dharma talk, which drew more than 300 attendees to share in the joy of the Dharma.
Since then, successive committee members have actively encouraged the establishment of youth groups in different areas, gradually expanding the network. Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha Titi, Jelebu, Persatuan Agama Buddha Prajna Seremban, and Rantau Buddhist Association later joined, bringing the current membership to six associations: Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha Pertang,Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha Kampung Baru Dangi,Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha Triang Ilir, Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha Titi, Jelebu, Persatuan Agama Buddha Prajna Seremban and Rantau Buddhist Association.
The Committee’s activities are diverse, addressing the needs of different age groups. For the elderly, Dharma talks and community talks are regularly organised, benefiting many. It is heartening that these Dharma assemblies also attract youth to learn the Dharma. For children, annual picture book camps and colouring contests are held to provide fun opportunities to connect with Buddhism and plant the seeds of wisdom. As for youths, various training programs and activities help uncover their potential, nurture leadership qualities, and develop different skills.
Over the past 35 years, the Negeri Sembilan State Liaison Committee has nurtured numerous outstanding Buddhist youth leaders. United in their mission to safeguard and propagate the Dharma, they continue to embody compassion, wisdom, and gratitude, with the aspiration of building Negeri Sembilan into a society enriched by the light of the Dharma and humanistic care.
