YBAM Puzhao Vihara Introduction
YBAM Pu Zhao Vihara (YBAM Administration and Training Centre) is located in Johor, near Kluang, on the 8-mile mark of Batu Pahat Road, covering an area of approximately seven acres. The temple was initiated by residents who raised funds for its construction before World War II, and it has a history of around 70 years. The temple originally consisted of a single-story main hall, with rubber tree plantations in the back. The temple was led by the late Lay Buddhist Madam Lim Feng, who in the 1980s, with the consent of the late Lin Shui Xin’s family and his relatives, decided to donate the temple to YBAM. Subsequently, YBAM established the Pu Zhao Vihara organising committee and, following Lim Feng’s wishes, invited Ven. Chi Chern to become the abbot to oversee the temple’s construction and Dharma propagation work.
The temple’s blueprint was approved by the Kluang North District Council on November 26, 1990, and was published in the Federal Gazette on April 25, 1991. The temple’s construction officially began on May 28, 1991, during the Vesak Festival. However, on August 11, 1991, the Kluang North District Council halted the construction due to the temple’s application still awaiting approval from the State Security Council. This suspension lasted for 17 years until March 7, 2008, when the Kluang District Council finally issued the approval letter, allowing construction to resume. Ultimately, after overcoming many challenges, Pu Zhao Vihara held its grand opening ceremony on July 11, 2015.
Once completed, Pu Zhao Vihara provides a variety of facilities for the community, including a large hall for lectures, Dharma assemblies, and performances; a meditation hall for practice and sitting meditation; smaller lecture halls, meeting rooms, a scripture copying room, classrooms, dormitories, a children’s room, an audiovisual room, monk’s residences, and a dining hall. The temple also features a museum for Buddhist scriptures, materials related to the monks, calligraphy, and Buddhist artifacts. Additionally, there are individual meditation units designed in peaceful greenery, surrounded by trees and equipped with a solar energy parking lot.
To fully operate Pu Zhao Vihara, we urgently need talents, resources, and financial support from all sectors to ensure its sustainable development. We hope that the temple will train more monks and Buddhist professionals, becoming a gathering place for Buddhists and aspiring to be an international meditation centre.
Pu Zhao Vihara is not only for YBAM but also a place for Buddhists across the country and even worldwide. We also hope that other religious groups will participate and come to understand the temple. Let us unite and work together to build, manage, and maximize the potential of Pu Zhao Vihara, creating a Society filled with Wisdom, Compassion, and Gratitude.
