From my secondary school days, I often saw my teacher writing calligraphy for people as a gift of blessing. Those fortunate enough to receive one of his works treasured it as something precious, accepting it with great joy and gratitude.

Deep down, I admired him greatly and often thought to myself, “How wonderful it would be if I could one day do the same.”

I was never particularly interested in calligraphy, nor was I blessed with a talent for it. Instead, I found myself drawn to painting images of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and young novice monks. Inspired by my teacher’s example and quietly influenced by his guidance over the years, I began, despite my own limitations, to copy the Heart Sutra and create Buddhist paintings to share with others—offering blessings, joy, and encouragement through my work.

As the years passed, I watched my teacher grow older. A heartfelt wish gradually arose within me: that while he was still with us, we might one day hold a joint exhibition together as teacher and disciple.

On 16 July 2023, I sent him a message:

“Master, may I have the opportunity to hold a joint exhibition with you during your lifetime? You write, I paint. It is not for fame or profit, but simply to leave behind a meaningful remembrance.”

Without hesitation, he agreed.

His immediate acceptance filled my heart with joy and deep gratitude. And so, this Joyful Calligraphy and Art Exhibition, together with this accompanying book, came into being through the shared aspiration of teacher and disciple.
