Chempaka Buddhist Lodge

The Chempaka Buddhist Lodge was formed more than 30 years ago in 1985 at the Chempaka New Village. It was named “lodge” instead of “temple” or “centre” as the entire management of the lodge was done by lay Buddhist followers without a resident abbot.

With the mission of propagating the Dharma, Bro Liew Chang Huat has formed the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge. Besides naming the organization according to geographical name, the synonym of “Chempaka” in Chinese means “encouraging thousands of people to learn the Dharma”. During the early years, the lodge conducted its activities at residential place in the village, and the first chairperson was Bro Liew.

After a year, the number of activities and members increased gradually. Due to the need for bigger space to propagate the Dharma, the committee decided to rent a new venue at No 4, Pearl Street.

In 1987, Chempaka Buddhist Lodge was registered officially under the ROS. At that time, activities conducted were mostly Dharmma Propagation based like Dharma Talks and Chanting. Other activities such as the donation of medicine, blood donation, family day, Wesak celebration were also held.

After several changes of venue, the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge finally acquired a religious land from the Selangor State Government in June 1989 at No 60, Jalan SS23/25, Petaling Jaya.

In 1991, a Construction Committee was formed. With concerted efforts of the people, the Chempaka Buddhist Lodge finally moved into the new building on 1 of Jan 2000, a new milestone in the millennium year.

The Lodge organizes many talks and Dharma classes to promote Buddhism, attracting people from all walks of life. They encourage children to start from young in order to build a strong Dharma foundation and cultivate right Buddhism values. They also conduct Dharma classes for the elderly and provide them with comfortable learning environment.

There are six units taking care of different needs, namely the Dharma Propagation, Ladies Section, Welfare, Recreation, Youth and Waste Recycle.

The Dharma Propagation unit takes care of the Dharma talks, Sunday Dharma classes, Dharma studies, cultivation, chanting, and library. The ladies unit takes care of the food preparation during various main activities, conducts flower arrangement class as well as cooking class.

The Welfare unit takes care of Dana to the needy, medical and blood donation. The Recreation unit promotes good relationship among members through interaction and trips. Youth are the new force and future leaders of the society. Thus, Chempaka Buddhist Lodge has formed the Youth section for succession planning.

In order to create a healthy environment, Chempaka Buddhist Lodge formed the Waste Recycle unit in year 2000, and working very hard towards the purpose. All incomes generated from the unit were channeled into the welfare fund.

From a small lodge in a residential place to a building fully equipped with complete hardware and software facilities today, Chempaka Buddhist Lodge could now effectively works towards its three missions which are: propagating the right Buddhism, developing community welfare and building good relationship among members.
