In year 1979, several teachers from outstation, namely Chan Ru Bing, Choo Lim Huat, Tan Tian Liang, Chan Zhi Hoong together with a local teacher Tan Pek Xing had set up an English Buddhism Study group due to the religious need and the faith for Buddhism.
During that period, the study was carried out at the resident of a government resident doctor Dr Than Nyut and his assistant Lee Qing Xiang. Later a pro tem committee was set up to manage the application to the authority for the group to become a legal entity.
The application was approved in September 1982 and the Jerantut Buddhist Association (JBA) was officially set up on 6 February 1983. The first Convention was held at the Jerantut Nursing Training Centre of Health Department and being officiated by the then State Assemblyman Ho Zuo Keong. The seed of Buddhism was planted since then and started to grow and stabilized.
The Buddhist talks were held at councils’ or members’ house initially, but it became inadequate later. The venue was then changed from No 52 of Taman Belian to the second floor of a shop lot at Taman Intan S-10. During that period the rental was fully sponsored. In April of 1984, the venue was again moved to Sungai Jan (No 42, third floor) due to insufficient space. However, in May 1990, the venue was moved to No 51 due to a slight disagreement with the landlord on basic facilities. The new place was spacious, convenient and ideal.
In May 1999, the JBA building was finally completed. The official announcement was made during the Wesak Procession where the JBA has finally acquired their own place. The day marked the end of their 17 years of nomadic life in terms of venue for Buddhist activities.
